Asst. Prof. in Res. Web and Mobile Design and Dev.


This position is a full-time, nine-month non-tenure track faculty position at the level of Assistant Professor in Residence in the area of Web and Mobile Design and Development.  The position starts on August 23, 2017 and is renewable on an annual basis.

The successful candidate will develop and teach undergraduate and graduate-level courses with a creative focus on Web Design and Development, Interaction Design, Scripting, and Mobile Application Development. Some of these courses may include “Introduction to Web Design,” “Advanced Web Design,” “Introduction to Mobile Application Development,” “Advanced Mobile Application Development,” as well as additional courses that the candidate develops in her/his area of specialty.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to research & scholarship through extramural funding, high quality publications, impact as measured through citations, performances & exhibits (in disciplines where applicable), national recognition as through honorific awards.  In the area of teaching, the successful candidate will share a deep commitment to effective instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels, development of innovative courses and mentoring of students in research, outreach and professional development. Successful candidates will also be expected to broaden participation among members of under-represented groups; demonstrate through their research, teaching, and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience; integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods and research tools; leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.

Additionally, the successful candidate will advise undergraduate and graduate students in the Web and Interactive Design concentration. The incumbent will also support faculty collaborations conducted through the Digital Media Center, which drives innovation in the commercial space for purposes of business communications, marketing, branding, advertising and entertainment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BFA, BA or BS in Art, Digital Media, Web Design & Development, Computer Science, or other related fields. Equivalent foreign degrees are acceptable.
  • Professional experience in Web Design and Development;
  • Experience with Search Engine Optimization;
  • Experience with Git/GitHub or similar source code versioning tools;
  • Experience with web design/development technologies such as HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, backend web development languages, databases, and emerging technologies;
  • Experience with the effective integration of social media and analytics tools and techniques;
  • A strong digital portfolio demonstrating ideation, design, and final project implementation in the field of interactive design with significant professional web and interaction design experience;
  • Demonstrated comfort with the Adobe Suite: Photoshop, Illustrator, AfterEffects, etc;
  • Demonstrated professional expertise designing dynamic and engaging screen-based experiences, mobile applications, web sites, web applications, and/or digital kiosks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MA, MFA, or PhD in Art, Animation, Digital Media or other appropriate fields.
  • Experience with one or more of the major mobile programming languages such as:  Swift, Objective-C, and/or Java -- experience with cross-platform mobile development is also desirable;
  • Experience with modern techniques in web development: LESS/Sass, containerized development, devops techniques, and emerging frameworks (AngularJS, React, etc.);
  • Fluency in one or more backend web development language: PHP, Ruby, Perl, Python, etc.;
  • Knowledge of the complete interactive design process including conceptualization, wireframes, flow charts, prototyping, user testing, analytics, and project management;
  • The ability to contribute to the diversity and excellence of the learning experience through innovative research, teaching, and public engagement;
  • A record of teaching and mentoring at the undergraduate/graduate level.

Appointment Terms

This is a full-time, nine (9)-month, non-tenure track appointment. Salary is competitive and based on qualifications and professional experience. The successful candidate’s primary academic appointment will be at the UConn Storrs campus; however, faculty may also be asked to teach at one of UConn’s regional campuses as part of their ordinary workload.
